2016 might have been a year many people are complaining about, however, the year ended on quite a high note for WhatsApp! As 2016 came to a close, all records were broken, as India recorded 14 billion WhatsApp Messages in just one day. The day was quite special – the New Year’s Eve.
New Year’s Eve is the time of the year everyone gets nostalgic, and looks back at the year that was. It is that time of the year you reach out to all your friends and family, and let them know that you’re there for them. It is that time of the year where you look back at the albums and share your favourite memories of the year with your favourite people. India took things one major step forward with 14 Billion WhatsApp Messages in just one day!
Let us break down this statistic even further – 14 Billion WhatsApp Messages were sent by Indian users in just one day. India has 160 Million WhatsApp users. Simple arithmetic suggests that this means each user sent out 87 messages on an average! This is a huge number for Facebook owned WhatsApp.
Interestingly, over 32% of these WhatsApp Messages consisted of some form of media. Users sent out 3.1 Billion images, 700 Million GIFs, and 610 Million videos. This is not the first time WhatsApp witnessed such a large number of messages being sent out in India. Earlier in 2016, users had sent out 8 Billion messages during Diwali – one of the biggest festivals in India.
India being the second largest population of the world, (and the largest when it comes to nations that have WhatsApp), gives the company a great advantage. But with Indians getting into festive mood, all the records of WhatsApp messages in a day were shattered! This is indeed a good news for the company, and showcases how the platform is still going strong.
