Android Oreo OS Update Will Come for Moto G4 Plus – Motorola Confirms

Last week, Motorola released a list of smartphones which would be getting the Android Oreo OS update. While it continued all their latest phones, as well as last years’ Moto Z smartphones, one major name was missing from the list: Moto G4 Plus. Motorola had promised the Android O OS update to the users of the phone when it had first come out and there was quite a furor when the name was missing from the list.

However, after this continuous display of public outrage over the weekend, Motorola finally decided to release the Android Oreo OS update for the Moto G4 Plus. Here’s the original list of smartphones which would be getting the Android Oreo OS update:

  • moto z
  • moto z Droid
  • moto z Force Droid
  • moto z Play
  • moto z Play Droid
  • moto z2 Play
  • moto z2 Force Edition
  • moto x4
  • moto g5
  • moto g5 Plus
  • moto g5S
  • moto g5S Plus

In their defense, Motorola said that the original plans were for the phone to not get the Android Oreo OS update. However the marketing material for the Moto G4 Plus had a mistake and it accidentally promised the Android Oreo OS update for the users. While they didn’t mean to promise something like this, but now that the promise was made, Motorola will honor the commitment. Here’s the official statement:

Since the time of posting this, we have learned of some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for moto g4 Plus. It’s our general practice for the moto g family to get one major OS upgrade per device, so it wasn’t originally planned for Android O. But it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading moto g4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit into our schedule, we’ll update our software upgrade page when we have more info.
