Google’s gen-next Pixel smartphones, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are all set to launch on the 4th of October. With just a couple of days to the launch, there have been a number of leaks and details which have emerged about these devices. The launch event will take place exactly one year after the 2016 event where we saw the Pixel and Pixel XL launch.
The leaks that have emerged so far give us a good idea about the two phones and what to expect from them. The phones are quite polarizing as some users find it interesting while others aren’t a fan of the design. Let us take a closer look at these gen-next Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones:
Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL: What to Expect
Let us take a closer look at each aspect of the Google Pixel 2 and all that we know about it.
Google Pixel 2 is manufactured by HTC while the larger of the two, the Pixel 2 XL is made by LG. While HTC made both the phones last year, this year Google is giving LG a chance too. Google has had a long term association with both these brands over the years.
The phones are expected to feature a metal and glass look and feel similar to last years’ Pixel phones. However, the glass back portion has been made smaller this year. While 2016 Pixel phones featured the fingerprint scanner placed inside the glass back, this year, only the camera is included.
Interestingly, both these phones will feature a squeezable edge – something similar to HTC’s Edge Sense. However, while HTC’s U11 was squeezable on both the sides, the Pixel 2 will be squeezable only on the left. On these phones, the feature is being called ‘Active Edge’.
Unlike last years’ Pixel phones, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will be water resistant. This was one of the biggest complains last year and Google wants to ensure this does not happen this year. The phones are reportedly IP67 water and dust resistant.
The regular Pixel 2 smartphone is expected to release in three color variants:
- Just Black
- Clearly White
- Kinda Blue
The larger, Pixel 2 XL is expected to release in
- Just Black
- Black and White
The Kinda Blue variant is expected to be a limited edition, similar to the blue Pixel phone last year.
The only major difference between the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL will be that of the screen size, similar to how it was with last years’ devices. The regular sized Pixel 2 will come out into the markets with a 4.99 inched display, while the larger of the two, the Pixel 2 XL is expected to feature a 5.5 inched display.
Google Pixel 2 will come with a regular aspect ratio, similar to last years’ Pixel. However, the Pixel 2 XL is expected to feature a slightly different look and feel with a body to screen ratio of about 85%. The phones will feature an always-on ambient display.
UI and Specifications
The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will run on Android 8.0 Oreo OS out-of-the-box. Both these phones will be powered by the Snapdragon 835 processor from Qualcomm. Reportedly, Qualcomm was expected to develop a Snapdragon 836 but it turns out plans changed due to delays. The phones are expected to feature 64GB and 128GB storage variants.
These gen-next Google Pixel 2 smartphones are also expected to feature a major change to the Pixel launcher where the search bar has moved to the bottom of the display. Some users may find it odd but we’re sure there’ll be a workaround once it launches. Check out this new Pixel launcher in the video above.
The Pixel 2 will run on a 2700mAh battery while the Pixel 2 XL will feature a 3520mAh battery.
If you were expecting a dual camera, you might be disappointed. These gen-next Google smartphones are expected to come out with a single camera. However, expect to be stunned by the camera performance. Google’s biggest USP last year was the incredible camera on the Google Pixel and with the Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL, the company intends to take this to the next level.
While no details on the camera specifications are available as of now, we expect this to be one of the biggest surprises that Google has in store for the phones. However some reports indicate that Google will introduce a portrait mode with these gen-next Pixel smartphones. This portrait mode has found its way in many major devices including the Note 8, OnePlus 5 and iPhone devices. Google too, wants a portrait mode of their own.
However, as per us, this new Pixel 2 Portrait mode will be a repackaged lens blur mode.
Multiple reports have verified that Google is not going to include the 3.5mm jack with the Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL this year. This is going to further aid in making the phone waterproof. However, the company will be shipping the phone with a 3.5mm to USB Type-C adapter which will help them use regular headphones on the phone.
In addition to that, Google will also be providing USB Type-C headphones, however this is going to be limited only to some regions.
Reports also point at the fact that both the phones will now be shipping with stereo speakers. With two speakers on the front, audio will be much better balanced than it is with the current generation of Pixel phones, as well as louder. This is perhaps Google’s way of making up for the loss of the 3.5mm jack.
Another interesting note about the Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL is that the phones will come with built-in capacity to recognize music. When music is playing near your smartphone, it will automatically be identified and appear on phone’s your lock screen.
Users of the Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL will get unlimited storage on Google Drive till 2023. This is an interesting addition to the list of features that the phone will be offering. Google offered unlimited photo storage in original size with their last years’ Pixel phones. This year they’re offering cloud storage, which is even better.
The pricing details of the phones have also been announced. Similar to most 2017 flagships, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL too, are going to be blow a hole in your pocket. The two phones are all set to come out into the markets with a wide price range.
- Pixel 2 64GB variant will be priced in at $649
- Pixel 2 128GB variant will be priced in at $749
- Pixel 2 XL 64GB variant will be priced in at $849
