iPhone X Specifications and Features Announced

Apple introduced the gen-next iPhones, iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus at their keynote event. However, Time Cook came on stage with the historic ‘One More Thing’ on the screen and announced the iPhone X. This is the tenth anniversary iPhone which was spotted in various leaks in the past. Let us take a closer look at the specifications of the device:

Display and Design

The phone comes in space grey and silver. It comes with an all new Super-Retina display. Apple has finally introduced an edge-to-edge full screen display. There are no bezels on the top and bottom too (barring a small space for the camera). The phone measures 5.8 inches and offers a 458ppi – the highest pixel density ever in an iPhone. The phone features Apple’s first ever OLED display.

You can wake up the phone by tapping on the screen! The home button has been knocked away – which is a first for the iPhone. Simply swiping up from the bottom takes you to the home screen now. Siri can now be launched off by saying ‘Hey Siri’. The side button has been made larger to trigger siri.

Face ID

Phil Schiller talks about innovative ways of unlocking the phone. The iPhone X now allows you to unlock the phone by simply looking at it. Phil introduced ‘Face ID’ – the future of unlocking smartphones. It has been made possible with the help of a ‘TrueDepth’ camera system. Over 30,000 IR Dots are projected on your face and a mathematical model of your face is used to unlock your smartphone! All of this happens in real time and doesn’t even take a second to unlock. The technology is powered by multiple neural networks.

The iPhone X comes with an A11 Bionic Neural Engine which makes it possible to process face recognition. It is a dual core processor. Using Face ID is quite easy. All you have to do is to look at your phone! Even if you change your hairstyle, put on glasses, or wear a hat, Face ID will know who you are. It can adapt to your face as your face changes. Face ID can’t be spoofed by photographs.

The processing is done on the phone and it is not sent to a sensor. Your facial data is secure and kept in the phone. The chance of someone using Touch ID to unlock your phone is 1 in 50,000. For Face ID, the odds go to 1 in a million! You can add an additional passcode to protect your phone. Face ID also works with Apple Pay, as well as third-party apps which support Touch ID.

Apple then moves forward to give a live demo of the iPhone X. Face ID fails! Craig Federighi goes on to show off how things look in the new iPhone. He talks about multi-tasking. Lifting from the bottom and swiping now lets you check out all the running apps. You can now move between apps by swiping from the bottom. He tries Face ID again, it works this time.

He shows off a demo of AR technologies of the iPhone X with Snapchat’s new filters and shows off animojis.

Animojis are basically Emojis that you can make with your face! They track more than 50 facial movements. Over a dozen pre-set formats can be used to express your message with your family and friends. It can be sent over iMessages.

The iPhone X dual cameras come with dual Optical Image Stabilization. The cameras are both 12 Megapixels and are pretty much the same as the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus cameras. Phil Schiller proceeds to show off some images taken with the iPhone X cameras.

The camera allows you to capture great photos in low-light, as well as incredible 4K video. The camera also comes with the portrait lighting feature seen earlier in the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. The iPhone X’s selfie camera allows you to click portrait mode selfies, along with portrait mode lighting.

Battery Life

The battery life of the iPhone X has been increased. It can last two hours more than that of iPhone 7. The battery supports Wireless charging with Qi certified charging devices. A new charging mat allows you to charge multiple devices.

iPhone X Price and Availability

The gen-next iPhone X smartphone has been priced in at a whopping $999 and will be available for orders starting the 22nd of October. The phone will go on sale starting November 3rd.

In addition to the iPhone X, Apple also launched at this event:

Apple talked about all four launches at the end and summed up the event with a quote that Steve Jobs had used at the first iPhone launch a decade ago. History has come to a full circle and the event felt like a massive tribute to Steve Jobs. Stay tuned with us for more details on Apple.
