Sony announced the Xperia X Compact at IFA earlier this month. It’s the newest “small” smartphone in the Xperia X lineup. And it’s now up for pre-order on Amazon. It’s priced at $499, which is not a cheap smartphone, like the Honor 8, OnePlus 3 or the ZTE AXON 7. But it does feature relatively high-end specs. We’re looking at a 4.6-inch 720p display, powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 650 processor along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There’s a 2700mAh battery inside which is not removable. There is a 23-megapixel camera on the back and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera included.
There is a fingerprint sensor on the Xperia X Compact, however the US version – which is this version that’s up for pre-order – does not have a fingerprint sensor. Like with the Xperia Z5, Sony opted to remove the fingerprint sensor from the device. They stated that this was a business decision, but didn’t expand further on why this was done. Which could possibly be because they were trying to hit a specific price point for the Xperia X Compact and the Xperia XZ.
This unlocked Xperia X Compact is available from Amazon now, and is slated to ship on September 25th. Sony has not made an announcement as to when it’ll launch in the US, but that date sounds fairly likely. This model is only GSM, so there’s no support for Verizon and Sprint right now. But it does have support for all of the bands on AT&T and T-Mobile now.
Additionally, Amazon is offering a $50 credit for those that buy the Xperia X Compact. This makes it a pretty interesting buy, especially for those that are interested in picking up a small smartphone, over a larger 5.5-inch smartphone or even the 5.2-inch Xperia XZ that was also announced with the Xperia X Compact.
Sony is selling the Xperia X Compact in black, blue and white – at least here in the US. The blue color is their newest color, which seems to be the color of the year, with most smartphone makers using it for their latest smartphones.
