Netflix has been among the biggest names when it comes to content streaming worldwide. The company has been taking rapid strides towards global domination. Earlier this year, the number of Netflix users surpassed the no. of cable connections in the US. The next big market they are aiming at is India. Netflix India has today announced two new Netflix Originals series – one of them based on Aravind Adiga’s booker-prize winning White Tiger, and another based on a female detective in New Delhi.
The White Tiger adaptation is going to be developed under the title ‘Selection Day’ while the detective show will be titled ‘Again’. The company is looking forward to produce them as a part of expanding their India-focused original content. Netflix India faces tough competition from Amazon Prime, as well as India’s Hotstar and Alt Balaji. Amazon is focusing on Indian content with shows such as Inside Edge being well received by the audience.
Last year, Netflix India had announced a Netflix Original show starring Saif Ali Khan based on a book by Vikram Chandra, titled Sacred Games. With White Tiger being adapted into a show, and another female detective drama coming out, it looks like Netflix is all set to take things to the next level in the Indian markets. As of now there’s no word on when any of these shows will be releasing.
“We are excited to be expanding our slate of originals in India. These projects have specifically local subjects, but will be great for our global audience, and are supported by world class talent.” said Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix in a press statement. Netflix said it has partnered with Seven Stories, a UK-based production company owned by directors Sharon Maguire and Anand Tucker.
